Malaysia top singles forefront Lee Zii Jia won his maiden All England Badminton Championships men’s singles title win over defending champion Viktor Axelson of Denmark in Birmingham in March.
Following his win, Lee is often compared to former national shuttler, Lee Chong Wei. However, according to reports, the new badminton star has distanced himself from being labelled as a successor to the legendary shuttler.
“I just want to be myself, and not compare with Lee Chong Wei because his achievements are unbreakable, his record is unbreakable, he is a legend. So I have my own journey, I have my own story to tell. I have to focus on it,” he said, speaking to journalists in a group interview via Zoom.
According to report by CNA, Lee Zii Jia’s superb victory has sparked acclamation from netizens, athletes and politicians across Malaysia.
In a Facebook post, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin called him a “national hero” and encouraged him to use the win to propel hm further for future success.
Currently, Lee is ranked world number 8 in the men’s singles category.
