How many of us will get to experience the Olympics in the midst of an ongoing pandemic? It was epic seeing the opening ceremony of the Games in an empty stadium, attended by contingents of participating countries. In the closing ceremony, Tokyo passed the baton to Paris after staging a Games that was delayed by Covid-19 and sceptical public, but nevertheless delivered its share of memorable moments.

Barcelona has confirmed Lionel Messi has left the club, after expressing his public desire to leave 12 months ago. His exit ends his historic tenure at the Nou Camp. Messi, who won six Ballon d’Or awards during his time at the Nou Camp, is widely regarded as one of the best players ever.

Malaysian diver Nur Dhabitah Sabri has been trending all over social media after coming in fourth at the women’s 3m springboard finals at the Tokyo Olympics. The 22-year-old scored 326.15 points in the event, just missing out on a bronze medal, behind the USA’s Krysta Palmer. The top two spots went to Chinese divers Shi Tingmao (gold) and Wang Han (silver).

The Tokyo Olympic is finally in place, and as we nervously watched the match that ensue between our badminton player Lee Zii Jia and China’s Chen Long yesterday, the match really had us at the edge of our seats. But alas, Lee falls to defending Olympic champion Chen Long after three sets in round of 16. Lee took the first set with a 21-8 score before the Chinese world No. 6 took the second set 21-19 eventually racing to a 21-5 win in the third set.

The Olympic Games was inspired by the ancient Olympic Games, held in Olympia, Greece from the 8th century BC to the 4th century AD. Baron Pierre de Coubertin founded the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1894, leading to the first modern Games in Athens in 1896. The IOC is the governing body of the Olympic Movement, with the Olympic Charter defining its structure and authority. The first Games held under the auspices of the IOC was hosted in the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens in 1896. The Games brought together 14 nations and 241 athletes who competed in 43 events.

The gold, silver and bronze medals awarded to athletes at the Olympic and Paralympic Games not only represent the greatest honour for the athletes but also an opportunity for Japan to showcase its culture and charm to the rest of the world.

The most awaited UEFA Euro 2020 is probably the final match between Italy and England.  England has defied all odds and expectation to reach the final, and many fans are gearing up to see what the English team will bring in this final.
